What We Do

Griffin collects millions of pounds of waste by-products daily from slaughterhouses, packing plants, butcher shops, supermarkets, hotels and restaurants. If this waste material was not recycled, the price consumers pay for meat would be invariably higher. Products produced from Griffin's rendered fats and proteins include animal feeds, pet food ingredients and organic fertilizers.

The fatty acids and tallows derived from the rendering industry are used to manufacture soaps, gelatins, cosmetics, paints, varnishes, polishes, water repellents, rubber and a biodegradable diesel fuel called Biodiesel.

Each week Bakery Feeds recycles thousands of tons of bakery waste (including breads, cereals and snack products) into a high-energy animal feed called Cookie Meal®. Cookie Meal is marketed as a corn replacement in poultry, swine and dairy diets.

The waste collected by Bakery Feeds contains a fair amount of packaging. In addition to the grain-based scrap, Bakery Feeds annually recycles more than 36 million pounds of packaging. This material is used as fuel, producing approximately 432 billion BTU's of energy each year. Bakery Feeds is the only company that recycles this packaging for reuse, preventing more than 1,000 tons of waste from entering landfills.

If it were not for the collection efforts of the rendering industry, this mountain of materials would create an immense ecological problem and tax burden. Practically everyone today lives better and more economically through the efforts of renderers.

In the United States 50% of raw steel production, 20% of paper and 5% of glass is reused. Renderers continually recycle 95-100% of discarded materials into useful products. Rendering contributes more than $1.5 billion to the Gross National Product annually and is responsible for more than $600 million U.S. trade dollars.

Griffin Industries and Bakery Feeds' plants are certified through Audubon's Cooperative Sanctuary System. Certification validates the positive impact the company's operations have on wildlife habitat and water quality as well as other stringent conservation guidelines. Thousands of acres of Griffin and Bakery Feeds company property are designated as wildlife sanctuaries. Employees also play an active role in environmental issues. Each plant is involved in outreach and education efforts within their respective communities, sharing ideas and successes for sound environmental stewardship practices.
